Support for a Tragic Loss

Dear RCSD School Community,

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Alexis Dominowski, an 11th grade student that attended Rensselaer Jr./Sr. Highschool. She passed away on 1/26/21 from a brief illness (not COVID related). Alexis had been participating remotely in school this year and has two sisters (6th and 9th grade) that attend school here as well.

We know that our students, staff and families will experience different emotions and have various needs as they process this loss. The Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) team will be available throughout the school-day for students or staff to drop in for counseling support in person and will provide virtual support for students that are remote. Parents or students requesting remote counseling should email Brendan DiLello for a Wednesday session or Amber Smith for Thursday or Friday sessions.

Parents that have concerns regarding their child’s emotional coping needs may contact their building Principal or PPS staff at (518) 465-8561.

The PPS office has compiled a resource sheet with helpful information and guidance for parents in talking with their children about death and processing emotions. The resource sheet also contains information regarding community agencies available to provide mental health counseling for children who require higher levels of intervention than can be addressed with parent and school support. Please find the resource sheet at this link – Grief/Loss Resources.

Our Rensselaer City School District Community stands with the family in support and will continue to support one another as we move through this challenging time.
