Members of the Rensselaer City School District Community:
The New York State Department of Health announced last week that high-risk winter sports would be authorized to start practice and competition beginning February 1 if permitted by local health authorities. Rensselaer County has indicated support for this updated guidance publicly, but our neighboring counties have not given this permission.
Our school is actively coordinating with other schools in the county to develop a well thought out approach to these activities. We have already invited students to sign up for the teams and been in coordination with coaches. While we know that the end result will not look like any normal season, we are confident that we will be able to offer sports and activities that promote the physical and mental well being of our students using proven COVID-19 protocols. This may or may not include travel and competition with other schools.
We hope to have enough information by the middle of next week to communicate a plan to the community for winter sports that meets the needs of our students without jeopardizing our ability to keep the school open for live instruction.
Thanks to the entire community for your patience and continued focus on student safety.
