Budget, End of Year, Bringing Students Back, and COVID-19

Members of the Rensselaer City School District Community:

I have a few important announcements to share with you.

Budget Vote:

On April 20, our Board of Education adopted a budget for public vote with a proposed 8.8% tax increase.

The vote will take place on Tuesday, May 18 from noon to 9 p.m. in the auditorium lobby.
See the budget presentation that was given to the Board of Education.
The budget newsletter has been sent to the printers and will be mailed out next week.
More information about the budget is available on our website.
I am also available to answer questions directly about the budget.

We know that many questions need to be answered to make informed choices when voting.  Our goal is to provide information and be available to make sure every voter has that opportunity.

End of Year:

Each year, the district gives back unused snow days.  Typically these would fall around Memorial Day in May.  With the cancelation of Regents this year, we are able to apply those days to the end of the year.  Knowing how much instruction has been missed this year with hybrid and remote learning, it makes sense to give back days when elementary students are typically less focused and JrSr high students would be testing rather than giving up more productive instructional days.

Please see the updated one-page calendar and note that the new official last day of school is Friday, June 18.  As in years past, the last week will include end of year ceremonies and early release times.  We will send out more reminders and detailed information about end of year activities as we get closer to those dates.

Bringing more students in for both weeks:

Don’t forget that all hybrid students in kindergarten and grades 4-6 will begin coming to school every week beginning Monday, May 3.  We are still hoping for flexibility from New York State that will allow us to make the same change for all students in grades 7-12.  Everyone is excited to see the students in person more often!

COVID-19 Notice:

We have been notified that a VRES student has been diagnosed with COVID-19.  This person was last in the building on Tuesday.  All contact tracing has been completed.  All identified contacts have been notified.
