Early Dismissal, TikTok Message, & COVID-19 Update

Members of the Rensselaer City School District Community:

One more reminder that Friday, 12/17 is an early release day. Pre-K and JrSr High will release at 11:45 a.m. and grades K-5 will release at 12:30. Our staff will have professional development in the afternoon. Please remember that attendance is important on early release days. Let’s work together to emphasize the importance of education by sending all of the students in.

We have received several questions about vague references to school violence circulating on social media. These threats appear to have originated on TikTok, and warn of potential school violence that may occur tomorrow.  As student safety is a serious matter, I spoke with RPD Chief Frankoski today. Our school has a great partnership and open line of communication with the Rensselaer Police Department. There have been no threats specific to our school district.

It seems that other local, State, and Federal law enforcement partners, as well as regional crime intelligence agencies, all agree that there is nothing to indicate that these are credible threats, or that these threats are directed at any schools locally. This appears to be a viral national topic. Although we do not recognize any credibility in this viral topic, the Rensselaer Police Department will provide an increased presence at the school on Friday to provide an added layer of security, comfort and peace of mind to our community.

Thanks to the students, staff, and parents that brought this topic to our attention. This is the type of partnership that keeps our school and community safer. We ask that parents take this opportunity to discuss with your children the seriousness of school threats and the perpetuation of these rumors. This is another reminder of the importance for parents to be mindful of your children’s social media activity. If we work on this together, our community will grow stronger.

We have been notified of 2 more staff members that have tested positive for COVID-19 this week. Please remember to send students to school with a mask and to keep the kids home if they have any signs or symptoms of COVID-19.
