Second Graders Explore the History of a Holiday Tradition

Posted Date: 11/25/25 (10:56 AM)

Second grade students recently learned about the history of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and how this long-standing tradition has grown over the years.
One fun fact they discovered: the first parade took place in 1924 and featured live animals from the Central Park Zoo instead of the giant balloons we see today.

To bring their learning to life, students designed and created their own parade balloons, showcasing creativity, teamwork, and plenty of imagination. It was a festive way to connect history with hands-on learning just in time for the holiday season.
