5695 - Student Personal Electronic Devices
As part of a statewide effort to support focused learning, Rensselaer City School District has been implementing its distraction-free learning policy since the 2024–25 school year. Starting September 3, 2025, all New York State schools will be required to follow similar guidelines pursuant to New York State Education Law §2803.
Under this policy, personal internet-connected devices like smartphones and smartwatches may not be used during the school day — including class time, lunch, and passing periods. Devices must be stored in approved locations (not backpacks), and exceptions are made for medical needs, IEP/504 plans, and other approved cases.
What you need to know:
* Devices must be stored safely each day in a designated location (not in backpacks)
* School-provided devices will still be used for learning
* Students can carry simple phones that don’t connect to the internet
* There are exceptions for medical needs, IEP/504 plans, or specific caregiver situations
