Advancing technology initiatives through the Smart Schools Bond Act

New York voters in 2014 approved the statewide Smart Schools Bond Act referendum, which authorized the state to borrow up to $2 billion to finance technology improvements in schools throughout the state.
The Rensselaer City School District was allocated $982,876 in Smart Schools funding. We are preparing our final submission intended to support the purchase of classroom technology and high-tech security features. The classroom technology will be in the form of interactive flat-panel displays to help replace our aging fleet of projectors and smartboards. The high-tech security feature portion of our submission will update and replace the district’s aging video surveillance system to ensure the safety and well-being of our students and staff.
The district intends submit its plans to the New York State Education Department after a 30-day comment period. A public hearing will be held at 5:30pm in the LGI prior to the December 17, 2025, Board of Education meeting. Final board approval is anticipated at the January 2026 Board of Education meeting. Lastly, State Education Department approval is anticipated by late spring of 2026.
