Construction-Related Air Quality

Members of the Rensselaer City School District Community:School Safety Update

We have experienced an unacceptable pattern of construction-related odors this week. Each has been followed up on and addressed with our construction team.  Each has resulted in additional mitigation efforts.  Unfortunately, those mitigation efforts proved to be unsuccessful.

Today, several classrooms were negatively impacted.  This odor today was not caused by a chemical. Instead, it originated from exhaust produced by a kerosene heater used to fuse roofing material together. The machine was operating on a different roof, but shifting wind conditions directed the exhaust toward the air handlers in the elementary wing, where it was drawn into the system.  This is unhealthy and unacceptable.

Fortunately, multiple staff reported this problem immediately so that it could be addressed.  Work was stopped.  Students and staff were encouraged to go outside and enjoy the beautiful weather for a few minutes while the air was cleared.  Three parents also followed up with concerns about this problem.  We always appreciate the communication so that we have a better understanding.

We are working with the Rensselaer County Department of Health and our Questar III Health & Safety team to collect additional information and further assess any potential project-related air quality issues.

This incident has demonstrated that current mitigation efforts are not sufficient in addressing the unpredictable nature of the wind. To ensure the safety of students and staff, the remainder of the roof work will be completed only when school is not in session. The contractors have been notified of this requirement.

Your communication and vigilance help us respond quickly and maintain a safe learning environment for everyone. It takes the entire team of #PartnersInSafety to keep the #fRAMily safe.
