Community Resource: Strong African American Families (SAAF) August Program

The Rensselaer City School District is pleased to share an upcoming summer opportunity provided by Rensselaer County Prevention and the Troy Drug Free Community Coalition.
The Strong African American Families (SAAF) program is a free initiative tailored for youth ages 10–14 and their caregivers. The curriculum is structured to strengthen family bonds, foster open communication, and support positive youth development through interactive games, group discussions, and creative activities.
Schedule & Location Details:
- Dates: August 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, & 27
- Time: 11:00 AM – 1:30 PM
- Venue: Boys & Girls Club of the Capital Area - Troy Clubhouse, 1700 7th Ave, Troy, NY
- Incentives: Complimentary brunch is provided at each session. Movie passes and additional completion giveaways will be distributed to participating families.
- Caregivers: Sessions will address rules and enforcement, school success strategies, everyday parenting, and encouraging racial pride.
- Youth: Discussions will center on setting future goals, navigating peer pressure, understanding personal values, and defining healthy friendships.
- Family Units: Joint exercises will focus on collaboration, navigating unfair situations, and reinforcing family support systems.
